American Lit ESOL

Fridborg 3-25, 3-26, 3-27

1st Google: The Simpsons The Raven

2nd watch any version of this short five minute clip, (and I would recommend watching it numerous times as you work through this assignment) because this assignment is not easy?

3rd.  Google: The Raven text

4th  Copy and paste the original version into word document

5th  Delete the stanzas 8-16 (paragraph within a poem)….keeping only stanzas 1-8 and 17-18.

6th  The vocabulary is complicated so you are going to have look up a lot of words because....

7th  You are going to translate the stanzas from Edgar Allen Poe into modern English so that a 3rd grader would be able to understand them....( I will do the first one here for an example) The rest is up to you.  This assignment is due Friday.

The Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
            Only this and nothing more.”
Coach Fridborg's Translation

One dull midnight, I was thinking, weak and tired
over many interesting books of knights

as like it was someone gently knocking on my room door
I said, "it is just a vistor, knocking at my room door."
On this

The translation doesn't have to be word for word but it does need to be somewhat detailed so I get a general idea of the meaning of each stanza.
