VOCAB 26-50

26. scapegoat - someone who will take the fall, blame, and can't fight back
27. Mass hysteria - when on a large scale, chaos spreads
28. magistrate - judge
29. crucible - pot (extremely hot) used to melt and refine metals.
30. wit - intelligence
31. gallows - place where people are hanged
32. sport - playing
33. pulpit - place from where the preacher delivers the sermon
34. apprentice - working under someone for experience
35. abominations - horrible sins or events of disgust against God
36. Aye - yes
37. soiled - stained, dirty
38. baptized - to be cleansed with water
39. mischief - trouble making, playful misbehavior
40. pretense - pretending
41. Hypocrisy - two faced; to say one thing and do another
42. Covenanted - you have been promised heaven because of your devoted life to God.
43. prodigious - great, enormous, giant
44. foreshadowing - hints at what is to come later in the story.
45. Candor - give all details, true open book
46. sermon - message given by preacher
47. hearsay - rumor
48. pathological - it's very naturally wrong and you are without regret
49. bewildered - confused
50 Martyr - someone who is willing to die for a cause
